How do you build big communities centered around commerce?
The outdoor sportsman's industry has had a long history of being technologically underserved. Due to the higher median age of the target demographic and the complicated legal and political aspects of gun ownership and hunting, many companies such as eBay, Craigslist and others have turned their backs on a multi-billion dollar industry and a community that by some estimates contains roughly 40% of the United States population.
After learning much about this market through our work with the Pennsylvania Firearm Owners Association it became clear that there was a severe need to bring more modern web technologies to bear in solving common problems for sportsmen online, and with that Arms Dealer was born as a means of building a large community centered around commerce.
Business Reviews
Launched in March of 2011, Arms Dealer started it's life as a system to help sportsmen find local gun shops & local shooting ranges database to help hunters and shooters find local businesses relevant to their hobbies along with ratings and reviews written by other users. It supports automated claims of businesses by owners through phone verification that allows them access to a dashboard where they can view customer interactions with their businesses and update information.
Free Classifieds
In mid-September of 2001 Arms Dealer expanded it's core offering to include a free gun classifieds system that allows members to buy and sell items in compliance with all applicable laws. The system features an advanced searching and faceting system that leverages the geospatial search technology used by the business database to connect local buyers with local sellers and an advanced feedback system designed to prevent abuse by either party.
The Future
In the future the Arms Dealer platform will be expanded to solve the same problem in other underserved communities, but in the mean time it serves as one of our testing grounds for pushing the limits of Ruby on Rails, Javascript, and HTML & CSS development.
